January 25, 2015 – New York City

Start spreading the news, we’re leaving today, we no longer want to be a part of it, New York, New York.

New York is the kind of place you either love or hate, and which it is depends entirely upon the hour, the season, the street corner, the weather.  I’ve been through the entire range of emotions, and settled in on loving it dearly but desperately needing to get far away for a long while.

Things I will miss:  shopping for flowers on 28th street and lamps on the Bowery; getting lost in the streets of Chinatown; hearing mothers and daughters fight in six different languages in the Macy’s dressing room; sunrise and sunset runs and bike rides along the Hudson; dodging tankers and ferries under sail in the Hudson; tulips in Park Avenue’s median; finding every food I miss from every country I’ve lived in in the aisles of Fairway (135th); having a bar, a bodega and a veggie friendly restaurant on every street corner; having anything delivered to my door at any time of the day; never again having to run into an ex-boyfriend; running into old friends coming back to visit the city after moving away; working with the best of the best from around the world on complex high-profile deals; movies in Bryant Park and opera in Central Park; and so many more.

Things I will not miss:  4 am garbage trucks; being upstreamed for a cab on a cold night; dodging pedestrians and parked cars on the bike paths; rent; swimming, skiing, kayaking, sailing in the cesspool otherwise known as the Hudson River; post-snow slush; walking to the subway on a day so cold that it makes my teeth hurt; sleeping on my office floor night after night because the 20 minute cab ride home would cut into my three hours of sleep; and so many more.

We’ve arrived to paradise, leaving the snow storm behind.  Sadly, internet here is spotty.  I promise posts and pictures from the beautiful Hope Town soon.

Leaving on a Jet Plane

  1. So very glad you guys made it with no trouble…several hours after your flight out of EWR all the rest of the flights out and in were cancelled due to the impending “blizzard”…which thank God did not really occur. We did get quite a bit of snow here in Brick…but more like 6 or 8 inches, not the 24-36 that were predicted. Enjoy yourselves and we will see you on Thursday.
